Okay so without going into all the cliche and controversial detail about why specifically I'm writing this post, I will just go ahead with my argument if my readers don't mind. ;)
As human beings we can all relate to the occasional taboo thoughts of suicide. Who hasn't wanted to throw themselves off a cliff after working in a cubicle, or after your girlfriend dumps you for someone you grudgingly evaluate as far better than yourself in every way. Camus said that the only real philosophical question is whether or not to kill ourselves or go on living (you know, once we realize our existential angst and see the world for what it really is - excepting existence before essence, rather than the often touted theist view, that we are born into (or trapped) by a purpose written by some unfathomable god..).
It's just... every time I read or hear about a suicide it seems like they didn't really think through even the act of killing themselves. I mean, drowning? Hanging? Blowing your brains out? Did they just want to die in the most unpleasant way possible?? I mean, maybe it's just me.. but if I were hypothetically gonna do something like that (which I wouldn't, because I'm too curious as to what shit-storm will befall me tomorrow), I think I'd go out and buy the best drugs ever and go out hallucinating I'm a god, a star, or at least in a fictional afterlife of some kind. ha ha Think about it though. If you really have nothing to lose, you might as well go for it. And it would be a far more pleasant death than all that other shit you hear about.
I don't know... maybe I'm just being an ass
Phaedrus out ;)

I don't know a huge amount about this subject but I think there are possibly 2 types of people who think about suicide. Those are mentally incapable of seeing past the fact that they are just so desperate to die, and those that are. The first type will do just about anything and don't think it through - bridge jumping, that kind of thing. The second are still capable of evaluating it all and so spend time thinking about the method. Often these are the ones that succeed rather than ending up seriously wounded but not dead.
I also think there is an element of whether people 'actually' want to kill themselves. I have experienced people taking overdoses and then getting cold feet and not taking enough. If they had really wanted to do it they would have succeeded. Either way the brain is hard enough to understand without mental illness added to it.

I don't think there is any other creature on this planet that will commit suicide?
Actually some animals do commit suicide. Dolphins have been known to do it, dogs starve themselves or throw themselves against cages. It's just more difficult to do for animals who can't grab a gun or take a pill. But they get depressed and sad just as we do.
Most are saying that's inconclusive evidence and based on circumstance. I did not find any scholarly, well respected, or scientific articles saying animals commit suicide. It's only known to occur by human hand. The dolphin thing was a rumor about flipper committing suicide. But all that happened is the owner of flipper said the dolphin "sunk to the bottom then stopped breathing". Most people think it was an animal rights ploy to get publicity.
Well perhaps suicide is a sign of a more highly evolved consciousness that takes self-awareness to a new level that allows one to experience existential angst. I wouldn't object to that claim I don't think.
